The name of Guam comes from an ancient
Chamorro word, which means "our possessions". In 1898 Spain conceded Guam
Island to the U.S.A.
Today Guam is a domain of the U.S.A and plays an important role as a strategy-base
on Pacific Ocean. The area of this Island is 540 sq Km, the population
is 150,000 and the capital city is Agana. Tourist industry is major industry.
The Island is surrounded by coral reef and the other topographic characteristics
are as follows.
Roughish coastline and narrow coastal plain in the northern area, rolling
hilly terrain in the central region, mountainous region in the southern
area where there is Mt. Lamalan, which is the highest summit at 406-meter
elevation.
