- Aswan High Dam, Egypt -
ASTER VNIR Level 1B
Aswan High Dam, in southern Egypt, is a rockfill dam constructed across the Nile River (completed in 1970), and is used for irrigation and power generation.
In order to compensate for not having enough water storage from the old Aswan Dam (completed in 1902), the Aswan High Dam was constructed about 7km upstream of the old dam. The construction was financed by the help of the former Soviet Union, and took more than 10 years to fully finish its construction.
The Aswan High Dam is 111m high and extends almost 3.6km across the river.
The artificial lake that was created by the dam is called Lake Nasserin honor of the former President of Egypt who had promoted its construction.
Lake Nasser, one of the world's largest reservoirs, has a storage capacity of about 170 billion m3. The lake is about 500km in length extending across the Egyptian-Sudanese border. (For reference: Okutadami Dam has the largest effective storage capacity in Japan and that is 450 million m3.)
