Island of parasite
volcanoes, Cheju-do Island, Korea
ASTER image of Cheju-do Island which is located 90 km south off the
coast of Korean Peninsula, floating in the Tsushima Straits.
Cheju-do Island consists of volcanic matter which erupted with the basis
of granite, and it forms a long oval east to west.
At the center of the island, an aspete volcano, Mount Halla (altitude
1950m) is towering.
The area covered with cloud in the image is Mount Halla.
A great number of parasite volcanoes are erupting on the slope of mountain
foot of Halla.
Their number is up to 360, and the distribution form is unique in the
world.
They stand along the long axis of island in the direction of east-northeast
to west-southwest.
The image shows such crater forms as cone, and horseshoe shape.
